: New Exhibition Venue Sketch February 2005 Page 2 The executive of the Club has been looking at expanding the opportunities for our members to show and sell their artwork. We have also be interested in trying other venues and styles of shows to determine if we can make our show events even more effective means of publicizing our members' work. Additional shows will allow us to select more paintings from any particular jurying to appear in shows. Our relative success at the Harmony Arts Festival has also suggested to us that we should consider other venues and styles of shows. We are considering a plan to conduct a survey of our members and get input and ideas for show venues and styles of shows for the future. This survey would be done in the spring. In the meantime, Larry Achtemichuk has negotiated an opportunity for us to have a WVSC sponsored show at Brewster's Coffee in Dundarave. New WVSC member, June Harman, had a very successful show at this location in the past month. The owner has been holding 3-4 week shows for the past few months and is very supportive of local artists. Price ranges have been in the $750-$2000 range as a matter of interest but this is not a criterion. There is room in the location for about 20 paintings. There is a 3 week opening from March 6 on. We will not be charged any commission for this show, but the charge would become a very reasonable 10% for any shows after June, if we choose to have more at this venue. The commission is just to recover the owner's costs for the extra lighting and insurance. Good framing and matting, as well as good quality paintings, is important to the owner. Neither the Club nor Brewster's know how this will work for the long term if we were to use this venue on a regular basis. Both sides are willing to give it a try. It also seems important that we put our best foot forward for this first trial. Our jurying schedule does not allow us to use the jurying process to select paintings explicitly for this show. The last jurying in November has selected paintings for the upcoming Park Royal and Capilano Mall shows already, and reallocating these would be a lot of effort and create a lot of confusion. The next jurying is at the end of April so it is not in time for this opportunity. The plan is to do a random draw of 25-30 paintings from the previous jurying. We would use as many of these as we could at Brewster's and have a few as backups in case a selected painting is sold before then or the artist is not able to bring them to this venue. In order to create a good first impression with Brewster's and their clientele, we will do a random draw from the juried paintings that had a juror's score of 5.0 or higher in the November jurying, which will mean we would choose from a possible 75 paintings. We would have no more than one painting per member in this show. The draw will be made at the next monthly meeting and announced in the next newsletter. We would need a small set up and take down team for the show at Brewster's. We would not need any members on duty during the show. If this works out mutually, we can then schedule more shows at Brewster's for the summer period, and build it into the procedures for the next jurying in late April.
