June, 2002 Page 2 4 çefoj 604-925-4214 Thanks to Jacquie Manning, our Juror Procurer (604-980-8907), for the following report on the most recent jurying session. The jurors for our winter and spring 2003 shows at Park Royal and the West Vancouver Library were Suzanne Northcott and Bob Rennie. I spent an enjoyable Saturday morning with them on November 23. They took their time examining our paintings and were extremely thorough in their scrutiny. The shared several observations with me which I would like to pass along to all of you. 1. For some of our paintings, especially watercolours, values are an issue. We must not be afraid to `punch in' darks. 2. They observed that many of us positioned the area of interest smack in the middle of our paintings. Usually, this should be avoided, but not always depending on how the values and composition of the rest of the painting are handled! 3. Some pieces were more illustrations than paintings. 4. A caution for mixed media and collage works: make the effort to `build up' the materials in a more complex and integrated way. Collage is difficult to do well. 5. Avoid `hackneyed' subject matter. Jurors want to see who the artists, are and not just a pretty picture. 6. Some paintings had too much information and were too complicated. Edit your work. 7. They pointed out several pieces that had white or light areas in corners of the paintings. The eye goes to these areas. This may be airight if the eye is led into the paintings by these light areas, but generally it doesn't work. 8. They had quite a lot to say about the painting of foliage and trees. They suggested using different brushstrokes in an energetic way vary the brushstrokes in other words. Change the tones and values and use reds (or oranges) with the greens. The outline of trees, whether bold or ethereal, should be definite. Does this make sense? 9. Generally, both jurors said we have a lot of potential and that framing was good. - A summary message for us was that we should pay attention to composition. They suggest that we take some of the Federation courses or take classes and workshops from Federation artists, wherever they may be teaching. I will ask the next set of jurors for their general impressions and specific suggestions on how we can improve as artists. It appears our framing has improved over the last few juryings, so perhaps with input from future jurors we may see agents from New York and Paris scrutinizing our works! If you have any questions on the jurors' comments or suggestions on whom you would like to see jury future shows, I would love to hear from you. `7eu J7ocio, 601- 922-r29r tessj@shaw.ca No report this month. `7'ieada: No report for this month Sce,tc St5zie 604- 9T- 4665 Awave 4t414a 604- 922- p249 rncrnahonalex@hotrnail. corn Several Sketch Club artists have been accepted in up-coming shows: Joan Fraser "Great Stuff" at Ferry Building, Dec. 6 21. Did you write one? Would you like to be included? Is your information up to date, or have you new shows and accomplishments to add? The Bio Book will be at the January Meeting, so take a minute to look at it, and then contact me before our spring Library & Park Royal shows with any additions or changes.
