THE V A R L E Y COMMEMORATION COMMITTEE A t t h e end o f t h e pipeline bridge that s t r a d d l e s Lynn Creek stands a l i t t l e house whose s e c o n d s t o r y w i n dows o v e r l o o k v i e w s t o R i c e l a k e and Lynn Peak. The h o u s e , w h o s e l e a k y r o o f was once p a t c h e d w i t h Tom T h o m p s o n s k e t c h e s was t h e refuge of F r e d e r i c k V a r l e y , a f o u n d i n g member o f t h e Group o f Seven a n d a teacher a tthe o r i g i n a l Vancouver School o f A r t . Varley's b r i l l i a n c e illuminated the c u l t u r a l life of Vancouver i n the t h i r t i e s . I n the words o f J a c k S h a d b o l t who b r i e f l y s t u d i e d w i t h him: "his legend, h i s c h a r i s matic p e r s o n a l i t y and h i s romantic v i s i o n l e f t an i n d e l i b l e i m p r i n t ... T h o s e who came w i t h i n h i s o r b i t do not f o r g e t him. In North Vancouver V a r l e y t r u l y found h i s ShangriLa. "B. C. i s h e a v e n , " h e wrote t o a f r i e n d from Lynn V a l l e y " i t trembles w i t h i n me a n d p a i n s me w i t h i t ' s w o n d e r . " On weekends V a r l e y l e d groups o f students on sketching t r i p s through Lynn Canyon, and h i s i n timacy w i t h the verdant beauty o fthe area produced profound changes i n h i s work. Today t h e Lynn p a i n t i n g s a r e among t h e most t r e a s u r e d p o s s e s sions i n collections across the country. Now a g r o u p o f l o c a l a r t i s t s are campaigning to e s t a b l i s h a permanent memorial t o V a r l e y i n N o r t h V a n c o u v e r . The V a r l e y Commemoration Committee has researched four p r o p o s a l s w h i c h w i l l be presented t o the North 6 Vancouver D i s t r i c t Counc i l and the Centennial Committee. The p r o p o s a l s include: reconstructing the abandoned f i r e rangers cabin Varley painted i n and s t a f f i n g i t with a resident artist, blazing a trail to the p l a c e s where he painted and e r e c t i n g e x planatory plaques there, h o l d i n g an e x h i b i t i o n o f the Lynn p i c t u r e s and r e naming Lynn peak, w h i c h o c c u r s i n s o many o f h i s w o r k s , a f t e r him. The p r o p o s a l s h a v e a t t r a c t e d the support o f a wide v a r i e t y o f i n d i v i d u als and i n s t i t u t i o n s .
