THE NEED IN T H E N I N E T I E S TO P U L L T O G E T H E R FOR T H E ARTS The decade o f the Nineties i s g o i n g t o be an e x c i t i n g p e r i o d f o r t h e A r t s on t h e N o r t h S h o r e . T h e p a s t y e a r saw the unique i n t e r a c t i o n of groups and i n d i v i d u a l s from a l l a r e a s of the Arts working together to develop a Cultural Plan f o r t h e N o r t h S h o r e . Now with the appointment of o u r own C u l t u r a l Development o f f i c e r , Carolyn L a i r , and the appointment of a N o r t h Shore A r t s Commission,the implement a t i o n o f many o f the p o l i c i e s and programs set sen out i n our C u l t u r a l P l a n :ir w i l l be i n i t i a t e d i n t h e e coming decade. C o u f The o n l y shadow on t h i s glowing prospect is that t h e N i n e t i e s may a l s o see a slowing of economic growth and a r e d u c t i o n of s p e n d i n g t o meet t h e i n - creasing debt. If this d e v e l o p s as p r e d i c t e d by many e c o n o m i s t s , t h e n we a r e g o i n g t o see c u t s to s p e n d i n g on t h e A r t s by all l e v e l s of governm e n t s . T h i s means the burden of c a r r y i n g out these programs w i l l again f a l l o n t h e men a n d women o f o u r c o m m u n i t y who a r e d e d i c a t e d to making the Arts a necessity of life. These v o l u n t e e r s are going to need a l l the help they can get, so i t means we a l l m u s t re-dedicate o u r s e l v e s and renew o u r s t r e n g t h by s u p p o r t i n g each other i n c a r r y i n g out these t a s k s . A r t s o r ganizations, individual a r t i s t s and c o n c e r n e d c i t i z e n s must recognize t h e o p p o r t u n i t y we now have to a c h i e v e the goals of the C u l t u r a l P l a n and make t h a t e x t r a e f f o r t to make s u r e t h e Cultural P l a n becomes a r e a l i t y . It i s time to look beyond o u r own i n d i v i d u a l i n t e r - e s t s and work w i t h the Community A r t s C o u n c i l s and t h e A r t s Commission t o make t h e N o r t h S h o r e a special place for the Arts.
