She was also the recipient of the YWCA "Woman of Distinction" in the Arts and Culture category in 1985. In 1987, she was one of five choreographers to win commissions for the Art Festival of the Calgary Winter Olympics. Judith's action packed, award-studded career leaves an ordinary mortal wondering how diis petite, softly spoken woman has reached such pinnacles of success. As an insight into the process Judith says, "I diink for a lot of artists it's not a decision that you make - it's a kind of verdict. You just have to do it." As for what's in store for die coming year, "there are an amazing number of things coming up. It's going to be a very exciting year. We're going to Asia. Touring to Hong Kong and Singapore. We're doing an enormous amount of touring in B.C., from Fort St. John to Kamloops," and if that doesn't leave you breathless, "There's a national tour, with some film and television projects in die works. Also we are continuing to present our children's programing in the schools," which is wonderful news for children on die North Shore. Judidh feels "It's really important for children to experience performing arts because if you're not exposed to performing arts as a kid you just don't know what you're missing." How does Judith manage to combine family life with husband, arts administrator Richard Marcuse and five year old daughter Rachel as well as being involved in such an exciting career - "It's a constant juggling act to balance the work of the conqjany, my own creative work and my family life." Apart from her many committments in the year ahead, Judith is keenly interested in what is happening on the North Shore. "What I'm really excited about is die fact we've got something happening on the Nordi Shore now. There's real activism here and I'm hoping that we can partake in whatever activities are generated here". North Arts News wishes Judith continued success in the coming year. We would like to thank her for her many wonderfiil contributions to die arts in Canada and this chance to get to know her better. 3 by Cheryl Whittaker West Vancouver's Judith Marcuse, internationally acclaimed dancer/ choreographer is described by performing Arts Canada as "One of the most sought-after artists in the country".
