Festivals Galore Summer is Festival Time and there is no shortage of them in our area. Just a few are described here. There is something for everyone. B.C. FESTIVAL OF T H E ARTS in Chilliwack will be happening as we go to press, so we will give a report on that in our next NSAN. June 24 - 26 NORTH VANCOUVER'S FOLKFEST includes performances at 8 p.m. each evening at Centennial Theatre. Tickets Adults $3, children FREE. There is also a great parade on Lonsdale, Saturday, June 24th at 10 a.m. sponsored by the Lions Club. Silver Harbour will have ETHNIC CRAFTS AND FOODS on Sunday, June 25 from 1 to 3 p.m. NVCAC's Craft Fair and Paint-In are also held in conjunction with Folkfest. See NVCAC Programs for details. June 23 to July 2 Du Maurier Ltd. INTERNATIONAL JAZZ FESTIVAL VANCOUVER This event produced by the Coastal Jazz and Blues Society, celebrates a broad spectrum of traditional and contemporary jazz. Over 400 musicians from Europe, Africa, Japan, Canada and the US will participate. Many concerts will be free. On Canada Day Weekend "JAZZ A T THE P L A Z A " (Expo site), 3 days of FREE CONCERTS wiU be held on 3 stages. June 30 to July 9 HARRISON FESTIVAL OF T H E ARTS presents die sight and sounds of Central America and the Caribbean with exhibits and performances from Nicaragua, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala and Brazil. There will be free outdoor entertainment, workshops, theatre, concerts, art shows, a craft market and much more. Information and accommodation 798-3664. July 14 - 16 VANCOUVER FOLK MUSIC FESTIVAL at Jericho Beach Park features over 200 performances from 18 countries. There will be special children's programming and 18 food booths. Information 879-2931 Thru June to July 8 NANAIMO FESTIVAL at Malaspina College Theatre - Plays by ROD LANGLEY and MARGARET HOLLINGSWORTH will be presented. Cast chats with cast members and Festival staff happen Wednesdays. "This year at the Festival the Island's stories are being told. The Island is speaking. Come and listen". Information and tickets 754-7587. July 10 - 16 ASHLAND SHAKESPEARE FESTIVAL in Oregon. You have to go further afield for this one but it is made easy by Eraser Valley College which is offering an all-inclusive tour package. Last year diis was a huge success with steel and reggae bands, Caribbean food, a beer garden, crafts from the islands and much more. People dance die afternoon away on die grass in diis park near die Seabui terminal. This festival is one of many events which take place in North Vancouver Pariu during die summer. STEIN V A L L E Y FESTIVAL "Voices for the Wilderness" August 5 - 7 at Mount Currie near Whisder features celebrities and entertainers in support of the Lytton and Mt. Currie Indian People in theirfightto save the Stein Valley from logging.
