West Vancouver Historical Society West Vancouver Memories vol. 12, President's Message I am delighted to announce the exciting news that two WVHS Board, members have been, honoured wdth District of West Vancouver Community awards. Dave Barker was recognized for his contribution to heritage in West Vancouver with the 2015 Heritage Community Award. Since 1998, when he joined the West Vancouver Historical Society, Dave has served as president and vicepresident a number of times and for the past ten years has been the editor of the West Vancouver Memories newsletter Carolanne Reynolds, also a board member, was recognized for her tireless work on behalf of the community with the 2015 Civic Commitment Award. At our September general meeting, West Vancouver's Reto Tschan spoke about the importance and relevance of archives and the plans for our own community archives. Continuing with the theme of community heritage and preservation of the history of West Vancouver, we look forward to a presentadon on November 18 by Nora Gambioli, West Vancouver Councillor, Steve Mikicich, Manager, Community Planning and Peter Miller of the North Shore Heritage Society on neighbourhood character and preservation. Check out the West Vancouver Archives' digital collection at archiveswestvancouver.ca. You will find the Len Norris fonds and the Joseph B. Leyland digital collection as the newest additions. These completed projects were made possible by grants from the proceeds of the sale of our centennial book Cottages to Community. Heinz Berger, a lifetime member of the Society and former manager of parks, has published his life story, edited by Francis Mansbridge, author of Cottages. An Adventure on Two Continents tells the story of his early life in Germany, training in the horticultural industry and early days in Canada. It's also a look at local government at work, from an insider's perspective. Heinz Berger was responsible for creating or improving such community amenities as the seawall, parks and children's "playscapes" from Glenmore to Horseshoe Bay and for many other innovations that defined West Vancouver during his 22 years with the municipality's parks and recreation department. This is the time of year when your 2016 membership renewal form is included with your November copy of Memories. Your continued support is appreciated by your fellow society members. Your contribution, financial and volunteer, is vital to the success of our goal to continue to preserve the history of West Vancouver. We have plans to provide more opportunities for our members to participate in the society in the coming year. page 2 no. 4 October 21,2015 680 17th Street, West Vancouver, B.C. phone: 778-279-2235 email: wvhs@shaw.ca Website: wvhs.ca Find us on Facebook Board Members President: Wendy Topham Treasurer: Marilyn Rhodes Secretary: Pam Dalik Membership: Wendy Topham Memories: Dave Barker Mvmicipal: Rod Day Lighthouse: Elaine Graham Website: Rob Morris Books: Jim Carter General Meetings: Laura Anderson Directors at Large: Ann Brousson Beth Fraser Barb Hunter Carolanne Reynolds Tom Warden
