West Vancouver West Vancouver Historical Society Memories vol. 31, no. 4 Fall 2014 · The Historical Society - Our Mandate Today In the 1970s members of the Rotary Club of West Vancouver, along with others, began to worry about the preservation of the history of West Vancouver's early days. Pioneers in the community were becoming older and memories were beginning to fade. It was at this that the Rotary Club plus the Municipality began to LAUREEN JONES (photo left, pictured right)recently donated a line drawing of West discuss a method for preserving this Vancouver's Historical Lawson house to West Vancouver. The West Vancouver Historical Society was incorporated as a nonprofit society on July 17, 1980. A committee of the Rotary Club undertook a membership drive and began a series of events to publicize this campaign. It was so successful that the Rotary Club stepped aside and the Society held its first election of officers. Thefirstmeeting was held on July 25, 1982 with newly elected Bernie Holt as President of the Society The first meetings were held in a classroom at Pauline Johnson School. In 1984 the name was changed to West Vancouver Museum and Historical Society and it increased its mandate to collection of museum artifacts and to start working towards the creation of a museum and archives in West Vancouver. The society rapidly grew to more than 500 members. A fundraising program was implemented to obtain suitable housing for the growing archive collection. The Society was instrumental in securing the former home of Gertrude Lawson as a site for the West Vancouver Museum and Archives. The Society succeeded in raising more than $ 500,000 , which, with municipal, provincial, and heritage partners, led to the establishment of the West Vancouver Museum and Archives. The building was extensively renovated, awarded heritage designation in 1989, and officially dedicated as the home of the West Vancouver Museum and Archives on June 29,1992. continued on page 3
