The Capon House by Carol Howie, Acting Archivist! In 1934 Arthur John Capon and his wife Elizabeth purchased a lot on the northwest corner of the intersection of 14th Street and Jefferson Avenue, in Upper Ambleside. At that time they were living in a modest bungalow on West 37th. Avenue in Vancouver, and Arthur was working as a Probation Officer at the Juvenile Court and Detention Centre. Arthur retired in 1935 and he and Elizabeth moved to West Vancouver and built a charming one storey house on their lot and planted a coimtry garden. According to the Tax and Assessment Roles the land was valued at $400 and house at $1,000. The Capon's were obviously very proud of their new home as they commissioned Harold Hilton Harper, a local commercial photographer based in Dundarave, to take a photograph of their house with them posing in the garden. The photograph (shown above) was taken in 1939. The Capon's had copies of the photograph mounted in presentation mats and sent them to friends at Christmas time. Arthur died in 1947 and Elizabeth continued to live in the house until her death in 1973, at 89 years. Soon after, the house changed hands. By this time a second storey had been added to the original structure. The address of the house was 1205 14th. street during the time that the Capon's lived there; however, In 1976 it was changed to 1405 Jefferson Avenue. The house is still standing today, surrounded by a lovely mature garden. page 3
