THE JONES HOUSE BY CAROL HOWIE ACTING ARCHVIST IN 1914 MISS MARY CHRISTEL JONES AND HER SISTER MISS ANNE LINDA JONES PURCHASED THREE LOTS ON 14TH STREET, JUST NORTH OF THE INTERSECTION WITH JEFFERSON AVENUE, IN UPPER AMBLESIDE. THE LOTS COST $230 APIECE. WITH THE HELP OF FRIENDS THEY CLEARED THE NORTHERN MOST LOT AND BEGAN BUILDING THEMSELVES A MODEST CRAFTSMAN STYLE HOME NESTLED IN THE SURROUNDING FOREST THE HOUSE WAS COMPLETED IN LATE 1914 AND ACCORDING TO THE ASSESSMENT AND COLLECTION ROLES WAS VALUED AT $1500. IN JUNE 1914 THEIR SISTER, MISS DOROTHY MAY JONES, WHO BECAME ONE OF WEST VANCOUVER'S PIONEER TEACHERS, SAILED FROM ENGLAND TO CANADA TO JOIN THEM. HER PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM, WHICH IS IN THE WEST VANCOUVER ARCHIVES' COLLECTION, DOCUMENTS THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE HOUSE AND THE EVERYDAY LIFE OF ITS INHABITANTS. THE JONES HOUSE, LOCATED AT 1252 14TH STREET, STILL STANDS TODAY AND APART FROM SOME MINOR ADDITIONS AND ALTERATIONS IT LOOKS MUCH AS IT DID WHEN IT WAS BUILT TOP LEFT - 1929.1.WVA.RAH - MISS DOROTHY M.
