T h e Salter House This superb Craftsman residence, also known as Hampton Court, was built for Mrs. Margaret Roberts Salter in 1913. Mrs. Salter owned four lots fronting the north side of Marine Drive between 17th and 18th Street, in Ambleside. Lawson Creek ran through her property and she chose to build her home on the lot bordering the creek. According to the Assessment and Collection Rolls for 1914 each lot was valued at $900 and the house was valued at $10,000 a considerable sum of money in those days. The house featured extensive use of river rock in the chimneys and porch piers and was one of the most prominent residences in Ambleside at that time. In 1918 it was featured in the VisitWestVancouver publicity brochure issued by West Vancouver Municipal Council, along with the Spencer House and the Vinson House (both profiled in recent issues of Memories). A poster of this will be printed in the newsletter in March. Very little is known about Mrs. Salter She is listed as the registered owner of the property, but there is no record by Carol Howie of her actually living in the house. However, there is record of John Lawson living there for a time when he was Reeve of West Vancouver from 1913-1914. By 1918 the entire property had been sold to the Canadian Hypothic And Guarantee C. Ltd., 525 Seymour Street in Vancouver By the late 1980's the house had suffered major alterations and had become surrounded by commercial development along Marine Drive and residential development to the north. However remnants of the original landscaping, including a garden rockery and mature cedars at the front and a mature holly at the rear were still visible. In 1994 the house was demolished to make way for the Hampton Court condominium complex which is set back from the road at 1765 Marine Drive. The West Vancouver Archives would be very interested to hear from anyone who has any information about Margaret Salter and Hampton Court. page?
