F R O M OUR ARCHIVES Contributed by Shaunna Moore, Archivist Have you checked out the West Vancouver Archives website lately? For the last few months we've focused on improving the accessibility of our holdings by describing and scanning our records into our online catalogue. More than 11,000 descriptions are now available through our website, and we've expanded our digital collections to include more than 3,200 texts, photographs, and maps. As part of our centennial legacy, we are scanning materials created by the District of West Vancouver throughout its 100 year history - including a ballot for the first election in 1912 (little more than a tattered scrap of paper!), postage stamps honouring the fiftieth anniversary of the municipality (see left), early reports and studies, and programs for significant events in the community's past. This project is funded in part by the BC History Digitization Program. We need your contributions! Our website now allows visitors to send us a comment about a particular photograph or other item. We encourage you to browse our digital collections and send us additional information (or corrections) to ensure our records are accurately described. We've also recently joined Historypin and Flikr. These social media websites alow us to reach broader audiences interested in historical images. They provide a forum for any user to contribute comments and stories about our photographs, so be sure to visit our pages and add your voice. Or upload your own historical photographs to contribute to the map of West Vancouver. Links to these websites and all of our historical materials are available through our website http://archives.westvancouver.ca. Contact the Archives if you would like assistance in using our online tools. Be sure to check bac kregularly as we're constantly updating. A plan will be in place in the fall for the application for specific project funding that meets our goal of ensuring the preservation of our history. Successful grants will be publicized and announced in "Memories". A full financial accounting will be made once per year regarding the expenditure of the profit. Once we have completed our sales for 2012 we will provide a statement of income, expenditures and profit. We recommend buying any books for gifts in the fall since there is every real possibility that we may sell out before the end of the year. Page 5
