Bas' Place Well known artifact collector, archivist and local historian, Bas Collins has an eclectic mix of artifacts, memorabilia and stories of West Vancouver. The official archivist of both the West Van Police and Fire Departments, Bas w/as of great assistance in the research for "Cottages to Community". I plan on having a feature in each issue of "Memories" highlighting one of Bas" treasurers or stories. The initial one is the first streetlight in West Vancouver. Bas has two of them. They were gas lights and were the only form of public lighting at West Van's incorporation in 1912. John Moir's photo of one of them is to the left. One of the lamps may be seen hanging from a light pole on the south west corner of 14th and Marine Drive in the 1915 photo below. Thank you Bas for preserving some of West Vancouver's important heritage memorabilia. Perhaps someday West Van will have an Archives with room to store and display artifacts important to our history.
