From the President By the time this news letter is received at your home you will more than likely have in your possession our new book"Cottages to Community". W e are thrilled with the response from the public after our successful book launch at the Library in mid-September. O u r advertising budgets have been kept to a minimum but still the books are flying off the shelves. W o r d of mouth publicity seems to be benefitting book sales. O u r author, Francis Mansbridge, and photo editor John Moir, along with a number of volunteers have been working hard to make the book as accessible as possible. Retail merchants are reporting brisk numbers and the Library and the Museum sell "Cottages" as soon as we restock their supply W e urge you to make sure you are able to get a copy for the Christmas season by getting extra copies now while stocks last. A full list of paces to purchase the book is printed in this newsletter. T h e Historical Society has probably never had such a busy start to the fall season. W e have made submissions to Council on the issues of the Gertrude Lawson House and the Ferry Building. In June we submitted a letter to Council outlining our position on the Gertrude Lawson House and that letter was published in the last newsletter W h e n the Arts in Ambleside group were promoting the large building to be erected on the Ferry Building site we met withe the advisory group led by Meria Beckerman to discuss that issue. T h e negative reaction to such a project resulted in a petition on behalf of a group of concerned citizens. O v e r a thousand names were collected in J i e community. W h e n we met with the Mayor on September 19th, 2011, she indicated that the response from the community gave the Council a clear message and that they were returning to the drawing board for different ideas. W e support the need for an Arts Centre but have always felt that the waterfront is not the place for such a building. A s we have very few heritage buildings still in existence in West Vancouver we consider it our responsibility to fight for their survival. Our mandate is to preserve the history phone: 778-279-2235 e-mail: wyhs@shaw.ca web site: wvhs.ca Volume 28, Number 4 November 201 I West Vancouver Memories -the newsletter of the West Vancouver Historical Society 680-17th Street, West Vancouver, B C V7V-3T2 of West Vancouver W e hope you were able to attend the Pumpkin Fest this year A n energetic group of volunteers from the community have worked very hard to make it vibrant. A s next year is our 100th birthday, it was felt that the template set this year would be of great benefit as we prepare to celebrate our centennial next spring and fall. T h e Society is also looking toward March of 2012 and we will have another exhibit at the Museum in honour of that special occasion. this will follow.
