September 2002 LIBRARY NEWS 1 he Library is in the process of creating a new look for many of its publications. Over the next year you will see examples of the changes. The look was inspired by the design of our web site in 1999 andfeatures the colours and in some cases the image of our beautiful stained glass window. X/ze Annual Report for 2001 is now available for you to see or pick up at most desks in the Library. It features the colours of the Library’s web site (www. west\>anlih. org). doming in late September we will be introducing a new design for the library card. The current design has lasted well and 1 know many of you treasure your “old card. †They will still work and be accepted. However, changes in the technology of barcodes and the actual card stock have inspired us to create a new look for the card. Designed by staff member Gabriele Raasch, I think you will agree that they are very handsome. 'formally, if you lose your card and need a new one, we charge you a $3.00 replacementfee. However, if you want one of the new cards, and your old card is still useable, the charge will only be $1.00 during 2002. This will cover our printing costs and a bit of the staff time needed to change your record. X/ze stained glass window is a beautiful feature of this Library and is truly a treasure. Be sure to look for an article on its history in the November 2002 Library News. The exhibit features works created from industrial cast-offs, discarded ‘junk,’ wood, and cedar. Charlie Cowie; “The possibilities of creating art with recycled materials are endless.†Charlie is a self-described “lover of other people’s throwaways.†With his oxyacetylene torch in hand, industrial throwaways are transformed into award winning art for the home and garden. Jennie Marsh; “When I create, both my body and spirit dance - at times I feel I am soaring. The acrylic part of my show is based on the bounty of my perennial garden and the inspiration of the 23'^'* Psalm. My ‘junk’ collages, I hope, reflect my interest in creating beauty from discarded objects.†Mark George is a member of the Tsleil-Waututh nation of the Coast Salish society. Mark’s work is broad in scale, scope and range. One of Mark’s trademarks is to incorporate abalone shells into his carvings. He also adds blue and yellow to the traditional Salish palette of white, red and black. Opening reception hosted by the Gallery and the artists is on Friday, September 6, 6;00 - 7;30 p.m. Everyone is welcome.
