Easy ones, such as Richards Street, was named after British Columbia’s 1876-1881 Lieutenant-Governor, the Honourable Albert Norton Richards (1822-1897) by Vancouver’s Land Commissioner, Lauchlan Alexander Hamilton (1852-1944), after whom Hamilton Street was named. However, there was also a Richards Street in Point Grey, which, to remove duplication, was renamed Balaclava Street in 1907, following a suggestion by Miss Doris Bulwer, in honour of the 1854 Battle of Balaclava, scene of the famous charge of the Light Brigade. Bulwer was successful in having another street named after a battle, Alma Street, referring to the Alma River in the Ukraine where the first battle of the Crimean War in 1854 took place. However, Bulwer was never able to have a street named after her. There are mystery streets such as Alice Street, so named in 1913 after an unidentified woman. To reduce some of the chaos arising from planning streets in Vancouver, the introduction of numbered streets from east to west was introduced at the turn of the century replacing names, while original numbered streets that ran north to south were replaced by names. All the information and more about naming streets in Vancouver appear in an interesting book written by Elizabeth Walker called Street Names of Vancouver, and published by the Vancouver Historical Society in 1999. With Christmas just around the comer, this title would make a unique gift for family and friends with a flare for local history. A copy of this book is in the Reference Department as well as a circulating copy in Adult Services.
