October 2001 LIBRARY NEWS West Vancouver Memorial Library has received several mentions in an article in the professional magazine of the Canadian Library Association. The article in Issue No. 4, 2001, of Feliciter is titled “Reaching Out to Young Adults." It highlights a number of Canadian libraries and the services they provide to teens. The teen page of the West Vancouver Memorial Library’s web site is mentioned along with those of Calgary, Richmond and Hamilton. Our Teen Summer Reading Club is mentioned along with our Cyber Saturdays. 120 teens read 794 books this summer and reviewed them in person, on paper or by e-mail! Reading earned rewards and prizes donated by local businesses. What is not mentioned in the article is our teen advisory board begun last year. In addition, we have been doing extensive work to create meaningful volunteer opportunities for youth that meet their school requirements. This summer’s very successful Book Buddies program brought youth together with young readers for 279 one-on-one half-hour sessions of reading together. The Library is pleased to be working with Parks and Recreation and other Departments this fall to survey teens about what services they use and need in West Vancouver. We hope it will give us information about what we can do to better serve our youth. The alleged cloning of Dolly led to an upsurge of discussion around the ethics and future implications of cloning, especially as it might apply to human beings. The more advanced offshoot of cloning, embryonal stem-cell research, has caused even a greater stir forcing the US President to define the direction of the research. Some of the current issues on this topic can be found in the August 20, 2001, issues of both Time and Newsweek magazines. The Reference Dept, has a print copy of a National Institutes of Health June 2001 study. Stem Cells: Scientific Progress and Future Research Directions.
