July 2001 LIBRARY NEWS About the Internet... The Internet is a fantastic tool for finding information. Over the past six years, libraries have been quick to see its benefits for their patrons. After all, libraries have been providing information for thousands of years. They have seen the change from clay to papyrus and paper, from tablets to scrolls and books. The invention of moveable type in the 15th Century created a revolution in the dissemination of information. We are in the middle of another revolution as information moves more and more into electronic formats available on the Internet. Gutenberg’s invention of moveable type resulted in an explosion in libraries of all kinds. Will the Internet have the opposite effect? I for one do not think so. The public library in our society is so much more than just information. â- It is a place where people can find assistance with their information needs from trained staff. * It is a gathering place for the community both young and old. It is a family place. * It provides information in a variety of formats and (other than the Internet) that information is well organized and selected on the basis of some criteria. Every day approximately 1,500 people visit the West Vancouver Memorial Library. They come to check out materials, to use the Internet, to read a newspaper or magazine, to hear a story or attend a program, to meet a friend or do some research. I do not think the Internet can or should replace our need to go out into the world and interact with others and be part of a community. So the library provides the best of all worlds, the Internet, great books and other materials and a wonderful place to visit.
