December 2000 LIBRARY NEWS We are still basking in the memories of a heady month of 50"' Anniversary celebrations. Internationally acclaimed authors Nick Bantock and Douglas Coupland spoke to capacity crowds. The Family Sleepover was a huge success, with comments over breakfast the next morning such as “silly. ...but really fun, †“a warm, community event †and “with the flashlights in the dark library it was like Hogwarts Academy. †After an action-packed evening, all ages settled down to read in bed between the stacks, under the computers and beneath the desks. The big birthday bash was on November 18, with 2,750people at the library. There was face painting, creative button making and the squeaky sound of balloon animals being twisted into shape. People were listening to the Sentinel Blues Band out- doors and beautiful harp music indoors, buying stacks of books at the mini book sale, watching the Three Billy Goats Gruff puppet show or learning all about Mad Science. After attend- ing the official ceremonies complete with speeches, prizewin- ners and a Colour Guard, they topped it all off with delicious Mure hie's cake, tea and coffee. Thank you to all who made this possible and to everyone who came out to celebrate with us! You can still drop by the Library to pick up copies of the prizewinning bookmarks from the children’s contest and read the eloquent memories of the Library submitted by our patrons. We can even help you with holiday gift shopping with our West Vancouver Memorial Library’ book bags and fridge magnets as well as posters of a luminous Ross Penhall painting done in honour of the Library's birthday’! The Library will be closed front 5:00 p.m. December 23 until 10:00 a.m. January 2, 2001. The Library has been closed for a week at Christmas since 1997 to realize savings in staff costs.
