November 2000 LIBRARY NEWS 2)ay ememorariee As usual, the West Vancouver Memorial Library will be closed for normal business on November 11'^, 2000. We will have our traditional reception immediately following the Remembrance Day Parade. This year is a special one as the Library was dedicated 50 years ago on November 11, 1950. On that day, the keys to the building were turned over to Acting Reeve John Richardson by Lt. Col. George Smart of the Library Society. It came to the Municipality "free of debt†having been financed almost entirely by donations from some 2,000 subscribers and the services of a number of members of the community. The Friends of the Library will be serving hot drinks, juice and cookies and everyone is invited. Doors will open at approximately 11:30 following the parade and the service at the Cenotaph. The Book of Remembrance, which lists all those from West Vancouver who died in World War II, will be open for the day so people can look through it. Please join us for a warm drink and the music of the Dundarave Players. The Reference Department holds a number of unique documents related to the history of the West Vancouver Memorial Library. Besides Sally Carswell’s book Fulfilling a Dream, there is A History of the West Vancouver Memorial Library written by Elizabeth Musto, the Library’s first chief librarian. An interesting compilation of newspaper articles are bound together under the title West Vancouver Memorial Library: History, and a compilation of five letters titled Stone Memorial Window: Correspondence concerning Donation to West Vancovuer Memorial Library, dated: July 12, 1950; March 22, 1951; March 26,1951; April 3,1951; and July 7,1951; between the parties, J.A. Morris (curator of the Vancouver Art Gallery), Mrs. Gentles (installer of the artwork), and Elizabeth Musto concerning the donation of the Stone Memorial Window to West Vancouver Memorial Library. Reference also has historical Photo Albums and Scrapbooks on the Library’s history. In addition, there are a number of pertinent items in the Reference Clipping Files under the heading “West Vancouver Memorial Library - History.†The distinctive features of West Vancouver go well beyond the Library. Just look to the community’s historical names, such as Caulfeild. Named after West Vancouver pioneer Francis William Caulfeild, who originally came from Clovelly in Cornwall, England. The result is, besides the naming of Caulfeild residential district and Caufeild Plateau, as well as Caulfeild Drive, Caulfeild Court and Caufeild Place, we also have the street name Clovelly Walk. So, what’s so distinctive? Well, a general survey of the surname Caufeild finds that it is normally spelled “Caulfield,†even in Britain. The name’s origin is thought to have been derived from the Old English ceauld, meaning “cold†+ feld, meaning “pasture, open country, field.†Perhaps the insertion of theâ€i†to represent the “ee†sound caused some confusion. One could argue that Caulfeild, rather than Caulfield, more accurately reflects its roots. Sources: Sunday News, 11 May 1977, p. 11; Dictionary of Surnames (Oxford, 1988).
