August 2000 LIBRARY NEWS Summer Reading The Library is hopping this summer. On July 4'^ we had our busiest day of the year! We handled over 8,000 items. More than 5,000 were checked out and 3,000 were returned. One of the things that makes us busy in the summer is the Summer Reading Club in the Youth Department. This year it is once again break- ing all records! We already had over 1,000 children signed up in the fourth week of July. West Vancouver offers three different “flavours †of Summer Reading that cover young readers from pre-schoolers through high schoolers. One of the most innovative, now in its third year, is the reading club for teens. We have 117 teens signed up so far this summer. Teens can sign up until August 26"’. This program was the first of its kind in the Lower Mainland when it began three years ago. Its success comes from a combination of the work done by staff and the generous support we receive from the community. Mer- chants in the area provide prizes for the club including sun- glasses, t-shirts, gift certificates and coupons for food. For a list of our sponsors, see inside under Youth Services. In order to qualify for a prize, participants must read books and report on them to a librarian in the Youth Department. Reports can be done in person, in writing, or by e-mail. As of July 24"', the 117 teens had reported on 491 books. Of these, 251 were either written or e-mailed and these have been collected into a binder in the teen section. If you are having trouble finding just the right book to read, you might want to see what the teen readers think is hot. In 1756, Due de Richelieu attacked Port Mahon, now the capital and port of Minorca, driving the British from the is- land. As the legend goes, Richelieu was ravenously hungry following the battle and stormed into the nearest kitchen on shore. He snatched all the food he could find, tossed into one pot, and blended it all together. This questionable story made its way back to Paris, where chefs blended together ingredi- ents in a like manner and so named their concoction Mahonnaise after Port Mahon, in honour of Richelieu’s victory there. Because the “h†is voiceless in French, the English spelling replaces it with a “y,†thus mayonnaise. Other sources claim that it was Richelieu’s chef that hatched the recipe at Port Mahon, not Richelieu himself, (e.g.. The Dic- tionary OF Eponyms, by Robert Hendrickson; The Barnhart Dictionary of Etymology, by Robert Barnhart; as well as most dictionaries placing this dressing’s origins at Port Mahon.) adult services IN THE GALLERY ...
