October ’99 LIBRARY NEWS Jravel Did you know that the West Vancouver Memorial Library is a first class travel resource? Reflecting the demands of our community, we have one of the best collections around to help you plan your next trip, revisit your favourite destination or indulge in the pure pleasure of armchair travel. We have a large and globe- sweeping collection of guides on everywhere from Bhutan to British Columbia. These could be as broad as Fodor’s Europe or as specific as Olustrated Walks and Drives in the Cotswolds. If you are going to a popular destination such as Italy, our collection is a treasure trove of ideas including Your Guide to 82 Decadent Cooking Holidays in Italy, and a guide to accommodations in convents and monasteries entitled Bed and Blessings Italy. If you are interested in places where tourists are rare, we aim to help you out with books on far-flung spots such as Easter Island and China’s Hangzhou and Zhejiang Province (believe it or not, this book has circulated 22 times!). You may even want to refer to Fielding’s The World’s Most Dangerous Places. How do you wish to travel? We have train, cruise, bicycle and boat guides. What are your interests? Vineyards, gardens, amusement parks or golf courses â€" there are guides to help you plan a holiday around these and other pursuits. What is your budget? Options range from Camp Free in B.C. to Alistair Sawday’s Guide to Special Paris Hotels. Have fun exploring illustrated books like The Most Beautiful Villages of Greece and the Greek Islands or the Traveler’s Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia Companion. Armchair travel buffs can use our two booklists entitled “Traveller’s Tales†and “Home and Away†to access the wonderful works of travel writers from Marco Polo to Bill Bryson. If you want to do your own booking of tickets and accommodations, the Library has Internet stations available to the public. And before you go, don’t forget our travel videos and all the tapes, videos and CDROMs to help you brush up on any of a wide variety of languages. Bon voyage! Its acquisition was the result of a library patron generously bringing it to our possession. The 2Vi million- word Babylonian Talmud was, for the most part, written in the Eastern Aramaic language, apart from the aggadic passages (e.g., parables, anecdotes, maxims, and narrative material) being largely in Hebrew. Originally this text was completed around 600 c.e.. It is essentially the interpretation and elaboration of the Mishnah and includes commentaries on the Kodashim and Tohorot. It’s intellectual sharpness and deep analysis of subjects has made this Talmud more authoritative than the Jerusalem (or Palestinian)Talmud, written in Western Aramaic and completed about 500 C.E. Buzzwords and jargon are those most irritating sounds coming from specialists of all kinds to make their speech secret enough to exclude those who are not part of the designated brotherhood. Librarians, doctors, lawyers, stockbrokers, bankers... what have you â€" we all have our jawtwisting afflictions. So too, do artists. A new title, Artspeak, written by Robert Atkins, begins to crack the code of the secret language of the artiste. Here we can sort out differences between such elaborate, orotund terms as Dada and Neo-dada. We also discover the California competition between the Los Angeles “Look †(or LA. Slick) and the Bay Area Figurative Style. Some other favourites are Neo-Geo, “Bad" Painting, Art Brut, and Transavantgarde. ADULT IN THE GALLERY ... “A Family Affair,†artwork by Rick Yzerman and his daughters Karri Brueckner, Charly Mithrush and Kristi Yzerman, will be on display October 4 - October 31,1999. Kerri uses her garden for inspiration for her floral paintings, Charly draws and uses watercolour but has just started with mono and lino printing and Kristi paints and has studied photography.
