September ’99 LIBRARY NEWS <^tepLIN^ The Library received a cheque last week for slightly more than $51,000. It was from InterLINK to compensate us for the books borrowed from us by residents of other areas. I am sure many of you use InterLINK^s services but may not know it. It is an organization of libraries in the Lower Mainland for cooperative services and it is funded by the Province. The basic tenet of InterLINK is open access to libraries for all residents of the region. Have you ever gone to the main library in Vancouver and borrowed a book or dropped by North Vancouver Districts Capilano Branch for something to read? Or maybe you just asked us to get you a book we did not own and it came from another InterLINK library. InterLINK gives you access to all of the Lower Mainland libraries and more. Daily deliveries around the area mean you can return that book here at West Vancouver and we will send it to the lending library for you. InterLINK libraries also participate in group purchasing agreements. This year we were able to provide access to on-line full text magazines for the first time. Our cost as part of InterLINK was one third of the price for WVML alone. In 1998, West Vancouver residents borrowed 43,231 books from Vancouver Public Library and 18,079from North Van District; in the Lower Mainland, InterLINK loans totaled 3,609,771 for the year. Clearly it is a popular and effective use of library resources. How can the library help? For the most part, periodicals are a more reliable source of information than random Internet searches, since Internet sites can be launched easily by both academic institutions and the tyrannically unhinged alike. With periodicals, however, the inquirer has some sense of the lesser evil. Try our full-text, on-line periodical indexes, EBSCOhost and Electric Library Canada, for which we have a dedicated workstation in the Reference area. For example: EBSCOhost found, amongst hundreds of others, a full-text article titled “Y2K Conundmm: What’s worth worrying about, and What’s not?†from an August 1999 issue of Kiplinger^s Personal Finance Magazine. In answer to the question: Why can the word “copacetic†ALSO BE SPELLED “COPASETIC, †“COPESET/C, †“COPISETTICK, †OR “kopasette, †a search in Electric Library Canada uncovered a March 22,1998, article called “Copaspellit†in iht Dallas Morning News. It seems the word was coined by a young shoe shiner. Bill Robinson, who lived between the years 1878 and 1950. He was commonly nicknamed “Bojangles†after becoming a famous American tap-dancer. So, according to the News, Mr. Bojangles said the English language needed a word stronger than “OK,†and not finishing grade one, he never spelled copasetic the same way twice. However, from the many dictionary and word- origin texts in the library, the word’s origin carries with it diverse controversies and Bojangles might have simply popularized the term. The key in your research is to cover all avenues: books, periodicals and the Internet to arrive at balanced answers to your questions, and the library staff can help get you started in your “quest for knowledge.†IN THE GALLERY ... “Correspondences†by Jennifer Judge and “Floral Fantasy†by Graciela Mora will be on display August 30 - October 2,1999.
