J U N E ’ 9 9 LIBRARY NEWS i World ofReadlnd While all of us look forward to our “summer reading,'* the term has special significance for the young people of West Vancouver. Summer means it is time for the Summer Reading Club at the Library. This year, the theme is “A World of Reading** and sign-up starts on June 14 at the Information Desk in the Youth Services Department. Club members receive a package including a reading passport and a bookmark. Summer Reading Club is a Province-wide program and is supported by the Ministry of Municipal Affairs. Local support for this program comes from the Friends of the Library. The club includes special programs that will circle the globe. Participants will experience mask making, games and stories from the 4 corners of the world. Space at programs is limited so registration is required. Club participants also read books and report on them to the librarians, who are always interested in hearing about a book read and enjoyed. This will be the second year for the very successful Teen Summer Reading Club. Last year 153 teens participated and read an astounding 1,434 books. Support for this comes from local businesses such as SunTech Optics, IGA, Red Horses, National Book Service, HMV Records and The Cherry Tree. For example, frequent requests for a relatively comprehensive list of suffix words such as -phobias, -manias, -philes (-philias), or prefix words such as philo-, pseudo-, psycho-, neuro- etc., can be formulated by using this text. Essentially, however, this book provides its readers with a listing of terms related to subject disciplines beginning with broad categories, for example: Sciences, then subgrouped as Physics, Chemistry, Medicine, Mathematics, etc. In a way, this book can be used as a complement to a thesaurus and a dictionary, but lets you zoom in on branches of knowledge. An even more specialized reference is -Ologies & -Isms: a Thematic Dictionary. Best described as a “wordhoard†thesaurus, it takes a general term like “killing†and gives variant types, e.g. amicicide (murder of a friend), parricide (murder of a parent), tyrannicide (murder of a tyrant); or a related term “murder†with such variants as androphonomania (homicidal mania), etc. ADULT SERVICES IN THE GALLERY ... “Summer Show†- art work by the members of West Vancouver Sketch Club will be on display June? - July 3,1999.
