M A Y ’ 9 9 LIBRARY NEWS Vihr9rY FAU|id9tiON ANNV9I C9Mp9i9N Spring is the kick-off time for the Annual Fundraising Campaign of the Library Foundation of West Vancouver Every year at this time the Foundation sends out a letter to each household in West Vancouver asking people who care about the Library to contribute. The Foundation was born during the effort to raise funds for the expansion of the building. It has continued to provide a valuable resource to the Library and its patrons. Projects funded by the Foundation include the renovation of the Elizabeth Musto Meeting Room and CD-ROM workstations. In 1998 the funds were raised to create a computer center. It is currently under construction and we look forward to using it in the coming months as we train staff and patrons on the new computer system. The Foundation is also becoming famous for their wonderful Ambleside Croquet Tournament and all of the other fundraising events they put on each year. The Library Board and the staff would like to thank all of the members of the Foundation Board and all of you who give so generously during the campaign and make their events such a success. For more information about the Foundation and the campaign, call 925-7410. REFERENCE SERVICES If you’d like to find out if Robert Kincaid was a real character, who the real Sarah Connor was, or who Chester A. Riley was then check out our new title The Encyclopedia of Fictional People. Along with an alphabetical listing of characters from television, film, theatre, literature, comics and even advertising, this reference guide also allows you to consult an index listing the titles of the programs and films in case you cannot remember the name of the fictional person. The only problem is that one must consult another text to find out the name of the actor(s) who played these fictional roles. Along with a consortium of Lower Mainland libraries. West Vancouver Memorial Library has made an on-line magazine database available to its patrons free of charge. The index, known as EBSCOhost Select Databases, includes approximately 2,800 periodicals of which more than 1,800 are full-text titles. The indexing and abstracting is divided into the MasterFILE â€" the largest most comprehensive index, containing both popular and academic magazines; the other indexes are more specialized, including 1) Business, 2) Health, 3) Primary (for children) indexes. Added features are Funk & Wagnalls New World Encyclopedia and EBSCO Animals, in-depth information on a variety of topics relating to animals. All indexes can be searched separately or comprehensively by marking the indexes users wish to incorporate into their research. Patrons find they can greatly reduce the number of steps and, consequently, the time required for gathering the material for their initial research by consulting EBSCOhost. The database is available in the library, and if the Internet is available to you outside the library, you can access the database from the West Vancouver Memorial Library homepage {http://www.wvml.jeslacs.bc.ca/start/), scroll to the bottom of our page and click on On-line magazine data base, when the ID-box appears, type in your library card number, and you’re there.
