May ’9 8 LIBRARY NEWS 1998 Library Foundation Annual Campaign April is kick-ojf month for the Annual Fundraising Campaign of the Library Foundation of West Vancouver. This year, as they have for the past decade, the Foundation will be asking people who care about the Library to contribute. The Foundation was bom during the effort to raise funds for the expansion of the building. It has continued to provide a valuable resource to the Library and its patrons. They have funded many special items in our Library. Their projects have included the renovation of the Elizabeth Musto Meeting Room and purchase of CD-ROM work stations. In the past year, they provided funds for new books to help us with the budget cuts. The Foundation also puts on several special events each year in addition to the annual campaign. In 1998 they have plans for a second annual Ambleside Croquet Tournament and their traditional author lecture. As well this year, they are partici- pating in the CommuniTea Party fundraising campaign with other North Shore charities. The Library Board and the staff of West Vancouver Memorial Library would like to thank all of the members of the Foundation Board and all of you who make their activities so successful. A chronology of North American events from 15,000 B.C. to 1996 A.D., this text provides the reader with key-word event, key-word subject, personal name, time-line and category indexes. Great Events breaks with most chronologies in that it presents each event as a two-page essay with a small, additional-reading bibliography at the end of each entry. For research in current events, these volumes are a good place to start. In a current issue of Index on Censorship, Salmon Rushdie tells us to “beware of behalfies,†thus introducing the new term behalfism into the English language. According to a recent Globe & Mail “Word Watch†item, the trend of setting up oneself, or another person, as the authority, or even the voice of a nation, to represent an issue such as race, gender, bilingualism, environment, war, existential- ism, etc., is defined as behalfism. A behalfie is, therefore, a representative of a group. There is a tendency for a readership or a receptive audience to fall victim to “expert†opinions, and we often see in texts, and hear on radio and television documentaries, a citation or interview from an “expert†in the field under discussion. Rushdie calls this behalfism, and warns us to guard against the inherent unreliability of an “expert’s†all-knowing ego. Library service on Sundays will end May 31, and resume October 18.
