August ’97 LIBRARY NEWS Every summer, all over the Province of B.C. something marvellous happens in libraries. It’s the Summer Reading Club for children which is sponsored by local libraries, the B.C. Library Association and receives support from the Library Services Branch of the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing. Each year a theme is selected and wonderful posters, bookmarks and brochures are designed by an artist. Some of these products are provided to all participating libraries and others are available for purchase. Province-wide summer reading began in 1990. That year West Vancouver lead the way, registering 502 children. Cheryl McGregor, the Head of Youth Services at WVML at the time, was on the first committee and West Vancouver resident, Nicola Morgan was the artist. Summer Reading Club now reaches over 50,000 children in 72 libraries, encouraging them to keep reading through the summer. In 1996 WVML signed up 907 children. This year we had already signed up 913 children by mid-July! Children who sign up are given a program of events, a reading record, a bookmark and a fridge magnet, all decorated with this year’s wonderful art. Staff pour their hearts and energy into developing and presenting special programs, listening to book reports and checking out piles of hooks. The Friends are supporters of the club. Each year they help us purchase some of the materials. Everyone involved is working to make sure that our young people are drawn to the Library and encouraged to become enthusiastic readers. It is a great cooperative effort. R E I' E K E N C. As wise as this approach seems, the introduction to the CPS states: “users are advised that the information provided in the CPS is not exhaustive. Other sources may contain additional necessary information for safe use of the product.†Some of the alternative titles held in reference that might interest such patrons are: the Complete Drug Reference (Consumer Reports Books); the Canadian Medical Association’s New Guide to Prescription and Over-the-Counter Drugs: The PDR Family Guide to Prescription Drugs. $ $ $ $ $ $ As the home of the American capital market, Wall Street inspires both awe and fear. However, a search into the history of the name reveals a somewhat ironic meaning in its origins. In 1653, the Dutch colonizers, fearful of both the Native peoples and the British, built a “wall†as protection from possible attacks on the northern edge of New Amsterdam. The rather flimsy wall was never tested in battle. The British demolished it in 1699, five years after they took possession of the colony. Despite the short length of the street (less than a mile), the name has stuck and has become a symbol of investment, wealth and power. The New York Stock Exchange was organized there in 1817, and Charles Henry Dow and Edward Jones (Dow-Jones) opened a financial news service in a basement of 15 Wall Street in 1889. In New York and financial circles, the term “Wall†has been dropped and it has become known in brokerage jargon as simply The Street. The Encyclopedia of New York City, cI995.
