The truly magnificent 34-volume Dictionary of Art would more ap- propriately be called an Encyclopedia. Upon examination one might feel this opus should be capable of answering any question that even a well versed person might have. Each entry is well documented and despite its briefness contains an amazing amount of original information to stimulate one’s interest. This set has been compiled over a period of 14 years by the collective efforts of art historians and scholars. One of a number of life-saving tools for the reference librarian is Brewer’s Dictionary of Phrase and Fable, and the more recent Brewer’s Twentieth Century Phrase & Fable. The phrase dates from 25 October 1989, when Gennady Gerasimov, the Soviet Foreign Ministry spokesperson, drew a comparison with iheBrezhnev Doctrine, which was quite the opposite. It was used for some years following this date to refer to Soviet non-intervention in eastern-bloc countries.
