To help the tenderfoot country- music audience, the Reference Department has kindly purchased the newly published Encyclopedia of Canadian Country Music by Rick Jackson. This is a well-illustrated, alphabetically arranged volume providing a brief biography of the performers followed by a discography for each entry. The study of word histories can reveal just how very parochial the birthing of many words has been. One such example is the word villain. The privileged classes of feudal society held the peasant or serf in such low esteem that they regarded those who worked on the estate farms or villas (headquarters of the farms or country estates- derives village) as villanus or “low, common or vulgar person,†with its sense developing pejoratively into a “wicked person.†The library has a fine collection of etymology and word-history books. Try some other pejorative words of interest such as fan (as in sports, filmstar, etc.), denigrate, gyp, easel, etc. On the other hand, we have attached negative meanings to words that were once more praiseworthy - for example, the word catmibal did not originally mean “eater of human flesh.†In fact, the Canibales were the original inhabitants of the island of Hispaniola (today’s Haiti & Dominican Republic) and the term became distorted through Christopher Columbus’ misrendering to be “flesh eating subjects of the Great Khan of China.†A I) U L T S R K V' I IN THE GALLERY “A View Of Your Own†paintings in watercolour and pen and ink bv Elaine Sills and “Joumeyings Into Water Coloui s†by Gina Charles will be on display in the Library December 2 - January 5.
