October ’96 LIBRARY NEWS An Enriching Experience A t *5 just over a year since we celebrated the official opening of Mure hie s specialty tea and coffee outlet in the west wing of the Memorial Library. When the establishment of a coffee service inside the Library was first suggested by a Memorial Library Foundation director, it seemed like a pretty radical and potentially problem-filled idea. A number of libraries and bookstores have begun selling coffee, but they ’ve taken pains to keep it away from the books. Our maintenance people were certain we ’d regret allowing coffee drinkers to wander everywhere except close to the terminals and PCs. Well, those fears have proved to be unfounded. The public response has been very positive and, let’s face it, what could be nicer than sitting next to the fireplace in the reading room with a good book or magazine and a cup of that wonderful tea or coffee? So help us celebrate this first anniversary - savour the flavour of a delicious latte or mocha. You ’ll feel enriched and so will we: a portion of your payment will be contributing to the long-term enhancement of West Van’s library service. The research and authority is academic with a general index and an extensive list of anthropological periodicals in the appendix. According to Webster *s Word Histories, the word “noon†did not historically signify midday. The English “Noon†is derived from the Latin “nona,†from the feminine form of “nonus,†meaning ninth. Therefore, noon was the ninth hour of the day or three p.m. John Wycliff’s translation of the New Testament of 1382 contains the passage: “Derknessis ben maad ... til in to the nynthe our, that is, noon.†Church services held daily at this time were called none or nones. Not until the 14th century did the English noon become an increasingly regular term for “the middle of the day (as noon). The Roman designation for midday was sexta or “the sixth hour†which underwent a change in Spanish to become siesta, the well-known afternoon nap to combat the mid-day heat.
