September ’96 LIBRARY NEWS Lightly Story Now that the new carpet has been installed in the west wing and the changes at the Library entrance have been completed, it’s on to our next project â€" the replacement of some of the perimeter lighting in the main hall. This involves removing the wooden grids containing fluorescent fixtures over the videos and along the front windows and replacing them with fixtures which will be more attractive as well as most effective. At the same time, we will be hiding in a special trough all those ugly electrical, phone and computer cables running the length of the south wall. There will be some noise and disruption while this is going on but, compared to other disturbances we’ve all been through in the recent past, nothing we can’t make light of If you regularly do a lot of photocopying but rarely have a pocketful of change, ask at the registration desk about our new touchkey system, which allows you to prepay up to 80 copies at a 17% discount. Without all those coins to carry, you’ll really feel a lot lighter! When does the 3rd millennium really occur? The spontaneous answer is January 1,2000. This however is erroneous, not because of a mathematics that tries to explain that we must finish our first year to be in our first year (that is, one must complete 365 days before one is 1 year old). That’s too convoluted anyway. If s much simpler. About AD 525, a monk, Dinoysius Exiguus, suggested that the calendar be counted from the birth of Christ, which he designated AD 1 {Anno Domini “the year of the Lordâ€). Consequently, we moved from 1 BC to AD 1 missing the year 0. The Christian era began on AD 1 and, one hundred years later, finished the century on AD 101. Following the same calendar and the same sequence of time, the 21 century or the 3rd millennium will begin on January 1, 2001, despite the vast number of celebrations set for the previous New Year’s Eve, December 31, 1999.
