JHY % LIBRARY NEWS MAGIC CARPET! Question: how do you move 25,000 books on about a mile of shelving out of a 7,000 sq. ft. area in order to replace the carpet... without anyone noticing? Answer: we haven't the faintest idea... sleight of hand? This month we'll be attempting it anyway when we replace the threadbare carpet in the west wing with the kind now found in all other public areas of the building. We'll try to maintain limited access to west wing collections during the two to three weeks of the project, but the patience and understanding of everyone will not doubt be put to the test. We're hoping Murchie's will remain open throughout, with extra iced tea to soothe everyone's nerves. Don't hesitate to ask us for help in locating what you need but please be prepared to give us 24 hours to locate it for you. And don't forget about the special holiday loan available on most 28 day books. It also contains a directors name index and a list of Canada's largest accounting firms with locations of branch offices and their partners. One other publication new to the reference collection is the Canadian Distribution Directory. This is a much needed resource that lists contacts by product and geographically and should be useful to many West Vancouver businesses. Ever since Watergate in 1972, the English language has developed a flare to end almost all scandals with the suffix -gate. So we have Billygate or Cartergate to describe Billy Carter's connections with Libya when it was America's "number 1 enemy"; Pearlygate, referring to the shams perpetrated by televangelists; the 1975 fraud inquiry at General Motors was called Motorgate; Alter gate for allegations that transcripts of official hearings in the U.S. had been altered in 1983. This fingerpointing compound reached such proportions that it began to be used abroad. For example: Oilgate referred to a British North Sea oil cover-up, and Stalkergate was bom out of a Manchester police inquiry; Muldergate, the infamous South Afncan scandal; Volgagate applied to a possibly vast, satirical scandal in Russia, mmored by National Lampoon magazine. Then there was Contragate or Irangate, which seemed to apply to almost every country in the world. This trend has finally broken through the boundaries of British Columbia's political arena â€" remember Bingogate and Hydrogate. IN THE GALLERY ... Artwork by Jeremy Walters and Graham Eagle will be on display in the gallery July 2 - 27. Jeremy is a surrealist, visually impaired, sixteen years old and attends West Vancouver Secondary School. In his own words, "In this exhibition each artwork has a corresponding map coordinate with two topological map drawings. Metaphorically speaking each map is a slice or layer of my mind, so owning one of my pieces is like buying real estate in my mind." Graham Eagle is a self-taught artist with a background in architecture who is now painting in his "Ayrie" studio full-time. His art work includes folk art, bird houses and bird feeders, wine dispensers, kitchen utensil holders and "other stuff you really need." Reception, artists in attendance, Tuesday, July 2, 7:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. Most art for sale.
