March « LIBRARY NEWS A Solid Foundation Last month a cheque for $55,000 was presented to Municipal Council by the Memorial Library Foundation of West Van. This was the latest in a series of payments from its fundraising campaign for the Library expansion of 1992/93. In addition to grants from senior governments, nearly a quarter of the $6 million project was funded by hundreds of individuals and organizations in West Van â€" a remarkable community commitment. Through a series of annual campaigns and special projects, the Memorial Library Foundation has also provided the Library with numerous CD-ROM workstations, desktop publishing equipment and interior finishing for the Children's Story Cottage. Its involvement with the Murchie's specialty tea and coffee bar in the Library will ensure a steady flow of revenue into its endowment fund, all to make West Van's excellent library even better. The Memorial Library Foundation will be ten years old in July. To learn more about this energetic body which, as a registered charity is able to issue official tax receipts, call 925-7410. Our community is fortunate to have such a solid foundation for its Library. Ripple Rock is a geographical name known to few under the age of 40 and fewer outside British Columbia. Before April 1958, Ripple Rock, just north of Campbell River in the Seymour Narrows section of the Strait of Georgia, posed one of the most significant maritime hazards along the coast of B.C. In 1943, a first attempt to remove it was botched at a cost of $1 million. In 1955, a 39-month sapper project began near Maud Island from which a 152-metre shaft was drilled and from this depth a 722- metre tunnel extended to the core of Ripple Rock. Here 1.25 million kilograms of Nitramex 2H explosives were detonated at 9:33 a.m. on April 5, 1958, recording the largest non-nuclear explosion in history. The cost of removing 360 million kilograms of the top of Ripple Rock was $3.1 million, making the Seymour Narrows safe at last for its busy shipping traffic. ADULT SERVICES IN THE GALLERY ...
