Some business and current affairs magazines provide their readers with interest columns, Asiaweek being one such periodical that does this on a back page called "The Asian Language." A phrase they recently chose to be part of the Asian language was "Ivy League." Asiaweek clarifies what the encyclopedias and almanacs neglect to explain, which is the origin of the term "Ivy" in this most prestigious of phrases. It is widely believed that "Ivy" was derived in reference to the ivy that grows on the exterior walls of the campus buildings in the league. However, this is not the case. In fact, the term stems from the Roman numeral (pronounce "I" - "V"), referring to the four original members that made up the league, an athletic conference for intercollegiate sports, namely football. The four originals were Harvard, Yale, Columbia & Princeton. The athletic competitions among these schools find their origins in the early 1900s. Only later were Brown, Cornell, Dartmouth and the University of Pennsylvania included. Thus there are now eight universities and the league was formalized in 1956. The misinformed include MIT and Stanford, but they are not Ivy League universities. However, the phrase is likely taking on the more general meaning of "prestigious."
