JiWiUlY <96 LIBRARY NEWS The Best of Friends! The Friends of the Library are part of the fabric of this place. They helped establish it in 1950, they've helped us make it as attractive and efficient as we could over the years, and they've risen to the occasion when special situations or events required extra help. Numbering 105 to 130 each year, the group includes "silent supporters" as well as activists; all are welcome. Annual dues are $10, for which the member receives $5 worth of free library reserves, preview privileges at the library book sale, an entertaining monthly newsletter, and the opportunity to associate with some very interesting, pleasant and fun-loving individuals. Via activities such as casino nights and the annual book sale, our Friends have donated nearly $80,000 to Library causes in recent years, including $21,000 for the building expansion, $22,500for the new bookmobile and $9,200 for the soon to be published Dictionary of Art - a unique publication in 34 volumes we couldn't otherwise afford. To learn more about this dynamic group, pick up one of their brochures in the Library, phone 925-7410 for details, or think about attending one of their meetings - 4th Wednesday of the month, 7 p.m. in the Peters Room. After all, you can never have too many Friends! reference services Eureka! Indeed, this is the title given to a newly acquired 6-volume set of encyclopedias in the Reference Department. The text includes the discoveries and inventions that shaped today's world, including the people responsible for them. On a gloomier note, the Department has just acquired the much-publicized Report of the Gove Inquiry into Child Protection, a BC government commission of inquiry into 5-year-old Matthew Vaudreuil's death from abuse in 1992. Nevertheless, the Internet has its aging features. For example: a cobweb site is a World Wide Web site that has not been updated for a long time, ultimately becoming a dead Web page. Aging and heavily-used computer keyboards with a disgusting buildup of dirt and grime are known as having keyboard plaque. If you wish to keep current with the new electronic jargon, you may wish to consult "Jargon Watch" in Wired, a computer magazine for the layperson wanting information without highfalutin jargon.
