The logophile may wish to check out the Oxford English Dictionary Additions Series. This set provides the reader/writer with the et>Tnology and usage of over 3,000 new words in historic Oxford style. For the most part, this Series lists words that evolved during the 20th century. Likewise included are words that have gone out of favour, such as "smellovision," which is a technique of cinematographic presentation in which pictures on the screen are accompanied not only by sound, but also the appropriate smells released into the auditorium. The word has retreated into disuse, probably because this technique never really got off the ground, except, perhaps, in Huxley's Brave New World. We often use the phrase time immemorial to mean "prehistoric times" or "time before memory." However, the phrase has a specific meaning in law, which clarifies the period before the legal code came into force. In England, AD 1189, for example, is the date under Richard I when English law is regarded to have been established. Upon the consideration of legal matters, any time before this date is technically regarded as time immemorial. ADULT SERVICES IN THE GALLERY ...
