OCTOBHI % LIBRARY N E W S Harmony It's surprising how many people lately have asked when we acquired the splendid stained glass window across the main hall from the Library entrance. Surprising, because it’s been part of the Memorial Library since 1950, though only in its present location since 1993 and only backlit so effectively (thanks to our Head of Maintenance Services, Paul Windsor-Martin) for the last few months. A reproduction of Sir Frank Dicksee’s “Harmony†which hangs in London's Tate Gallery, the window was commissioned by Henry and Beatrice Stone in memory of their son who died on active service in 1918. It was completed by the London firm of Morris & Co. in 1931 and graced the Vancouver Art Gallery until World War II when it was placed in storage. Returned to the Stones ’ surviving daughter, Mrs. Alan Gentles, after the war, it was donated by her to this Library on its dedication as a war memorial in 1950. As the Library has expanded over the years the window’s location has changed. We hope you agree it is presently in close harmony with its surroundings.
