The next time it rains count the number of umbrellas you see sporting the logo of the West Vancouver Memorial Library. Already dozens have been sold (did you spot Foundation members and friends flaunting them in the Community Day parade last month?) The proceeds from umbrella sales, together with a stream of donations, have boosted the Library's Rainy Day Campaign. If you haven't yet sent in your cheque, what are you waiting for? You know it rains here even in July. The newly acquired 3-volume set of MagiWs Medical Guide: Health and Illness may approach the ideal of an intermediate, but intelligent, user's medical guide. It is well but not perplexingly illustrated, and each entry is substantial enough to leave the majority of our patrons with a measurable understanding of the topic. Ever wondered why we break a bottle of champagne across a ship's bow? Apparently it is the continuation of a much older tradition when a vessel was symbolically given life by smearing human blood over it. Later, the blood was replaced by red wine, but nowadays champagne invariably serves this purpose of giving life. Other origins of this superstition claim the custom began with the offering of a libation to the gods of the sea by pouring wine upon the deck that good fortune should attend the ship -- but no mention of "blood." Whom are we to believe? ADULT IN THE GALLERY ... "Harmony in Nature" ... photographs by West Vancouver artist Lome Topham will be on display in the Library July 3 - July 29.
