MaRCI ’15 LIBRARY NEWS (^he following announcement may shock and dismay some patrons. Please remain calm and accept our assurances that the Memorial Library will still be the friendly, folksy place you’ve always known. Here’s the announcement: WITHIN THE NEXT 4 TO 8 WEEKS WE WILL BE DOING AWAY WITH DATE SLIPS. Date slips. Those 3x5 cards in different hues you insert in the pocket of each borrowed item to let you know when it’s due for return. After the card catalogue, surely the most venerable aspect of any library, r^om, what’s a card catalogue?’'] Like other libraries, we’ve been overtaken by technology and the need - given steadily growing actitnty levels - to streamline operations and ensure maximum productivity for our hard- pressed staff. Something to stick on the fridge door or file in the top drawer of the desk. OK, not the same, but maybe now we’ll be able to keep the shelves in better shape. Progress - can’t fight it; pointless to try ... Spinach is a vegetable regarded as highly nutritious, a myth reinforced by the cartoon character Popeye, created by Max Flischer. Spinach does carry 4 mg of iron per 100 g of leaf, which is high compared to other vegetables. However, this iron combines with the oxalic acid in spinach to form an insoluble oxalate, which accounts for the bitter taste of this vegetable. After having activated the taste buds, the iron consequently passes through the body unchanged. [SOURCE: Brewer’s 20th century phrase & fable ,p.576] U L T S E R V IN THE GALLERY...
