February ’is LIBRARY NEWS (^Ihe Friends of the Memorial Library are part of the fabric of this place. They helped establish it in 1950, they*ve helped us make it as attractive, welcoming and efficient as we could over the years, and they've risen to the occasion when special situations or events required extra help. Numbering between 105 and 130 each year, the group includes "silent supporters" as well as activists; all are welcome. Annual dues are $10, for which the member receives $5 worth of free library reserves, preview privileges at the Library book sale, an entertaining monthly newsletter, and the opportunity to associate with some very interesting, pleasant and fun- loving individuals. Via activities such as casino nights and the annual book sale, our Friends have donated nearly $70,000 to various Library causes in recent years, including $21,000 for the building expansion and $22,500 for the new bookmobile. The Friends are looking for additional members. To learn more about this dynamic group, pick up one of their brochures in the Library, or think about attending one of their meetings, 4th Wednesday of the month, 7 p.m. in the Peter J. Peters Room. This is the first comprehensive study of architecture which places Canada’s buildings in their social and historical context. Kalman brings to light the distinctive characteristics of Canadian architecture and architects. The more than 900 pages in these two volumes have over 850 illustrations. Both volumes are indexed and contain glossaries and bibliographical references. The word "dandelion" is derived from the French dent de lion, meaning lion’s tooth, owing to the resemblance of the leaves of this flower to the teeth of a lion. However, there is controversy over which part of the plant really resembles the lion’s teeth â€" the leaves or the yellow flowers likened to the golden teeth of the heraldic lion. The most favoured books are, year after year, "read under dim spot lamps, in taxis or air shuttles, balanced on subways, carried on boardwalks and into bathtubs. They develop broken spines, pages like prune skin, or go to their reward in the land of lost umbrellas." Donald Walker, NY Public Library ADULT SERVICES IN THE GALLERY ...
