December ’H LIBRARY NEWS vJ ( '<7'W^l{ A Season of Gifts the Christmas season approaches, we are pleased to acknowledge two outstanding gifts to the Memorial Library. Anthea Mallinson is a young West Vancouer artist who has "been happy to enjoy this library since my childhood.†Her tapestry â€Woman and Child,†depicting a universal image of a mother shielding her child from life's unknown hazards, has been part of several prestigious exhibitions, notably the first Kyoto Craft Competition International, 1986. It has brought to life the west wall of the main floor gallery where it now hangs above the archway dividing the old and new parts of the building. Marie Moscovitch, another longtime supporter of the Memorial Library and the community, has donated the gas fireplace, drapes, sofa, paintings and green table lamp that have transformed the reading room on the reference level into what must be one of the cosiest, most attractive public rooms to be found in West Vancouver. Just the place to be on a cold, wet, dark December afternoon! We applaud the generosity of these two friends of West Van's Library. WEST VANCOUVER MEMORIAL LIBRARY 1950 Mariae Dnvc Wejt Vancouver. For the first time in years she was humbled by two entrepreneurs, brothers Gad and Hans Rausing at £5.2-billion, for primarily developing the product TctraPak, plastic and aluminium-laminated containers for milk and juice. This chatter can be found in the newly acquired title Britain's Richest 500 published by the Sunday Times. Other prominently affluent British mortals of interest to a North American, "Brit-buff audience are John Paul Getty II at £1.65-billion, Paul McCartney at £400-million, Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber at £300-million and Elton John at £130-million, while teetering on the fringes of epicurean poverty are Mick Jagger at £90-million, Phil Collins at £60-million, George Michael at £50-million. Sting at £30-million, George Harrison and Rod Stewart at £25-million, and Roger Moore at £20-million. For the most part, women are conspicuously absent from this list of privilege; even Mark Thatcher at £40-million appears, while his once-celebrated mother, Lady Margaret has been banished to the ghettoes of the unwealthy. Authors, poets and other literary figures are invisible to the register. You will find their wealth on the shelves, ledges and tables of libraries. Recall the quip Groucho Mark made upon borrowing a writer’s work. "From the moment I picked your book up until I laid it down I was convulsed with laughter. Someday I intend reading it." (On S.J. Perelman’s 1929 book Dawn Ginsbergh's Revenge. Quoted in Life 9 Feb 1962) ADULT IN THE GALLERY ...
