REFERENCE DEPARTMENT The recently arrived 4-volume New Grove Dictionary of Opera, is almost entirely revised. This 5,000-page monument provides bibliographical references and institutional locations of original sources for each applicable entry. The boundaries of the canon have been expanded beyond conventional notions of opera, bringing to the reader such topics as Rock Opera, Sacred Opera, Travelling Troupes, Musical Allegory, etc. A recent acquisition which made headlines is entitled Crossing the Boundaries. It was prepared for the College of Physicians and Surgeons of B.C. to examine the issue of sexual misconduct by physicians. This title can be located and used in the reference department. On a lighter note is a new book called Canada Firsts by Ralph Nader. It is interesting because an American shows that Canadians were first in doing, discovering and inventing much that Americans and the rest of the world have taken credit for, Canada Firsts is arranged by topic and includes a bibliography for those interested in delving into specific topics. ADULT SERVICES IN THE GALLERY .... art exhibit cancelled temporarily. FEBRUARY .... send a love line to your Valentine! ¥ DID YOU KNOW .... ST. VALENTINE who was martyred in Rome on the 14th of February about the year 270 A.D, was never concerned with cupids and hearts, and the connection of his name with that of love is purely accidental. It was because St. Valentine died on the 14th that his name ever since has been associated with the spring festival of Lupercalia which was celebrated on February 15th. Geoffrey Chaucer first wrote of St. Valentine in association with birds pairing. In the 18th century, love tokens, religious valentines and the advent of greeting cards hastened the evolution of the valentine. Today the custom persists.
