REFERENCE DEPARTMENT When one considers the perspective from which early explorers and cartographers had to draw their maps, it's quite amazing that they were produced with such ingenious accuracy, Bie Mapping of North Anerica contains examples of many of the finest historical maps of this continent including some of great rarity and value. The newly revised 4th edition of the Concise Dictionary of Anerican Biography covers outstanding American personalities who died before 1971, ranging from Daniel Boone, Black Hawk, and Edward Bellamy to Billie Holiday, Martin Luther King, and Nat "King" Cole, but not Elvis Presley since he died in 1977. The entries are short and concise and can be useful for discovering more obscure facts such as Norma Jean Mortensen's stage name (Marilyn Monroe), and Malcolm X's birth name (Malcolm Little), Included is an "Occupations Index" which makes name searches easier for those t’ip-of-the-tongue memories. The Business in Vancouver group has come out with a publication called New Business Licenses. This weekly release includes new business applications throughout the Lower Mainland and is arranged alphabetically by municipality. This title could prove valuable to a number of library users, including sales agents, marketing consultants, demographers, business researchers, etc. It can be seen at the reference desk as we are acquiring this on trial basis.
