Given the breadth of West Van, combined with the lack of population density that would support a library branch, this seemed a particularly apt approach. It still seems so today. That first bookmobile, a hand-me-down from Burnaby, lasted until 1976 when it was replaced with a brand new GMC Valu-Van capable of carrying about 2,000 books. This is the vehicle that most of us are familiar with, having seen it parked at one of its eleven regular weekly stops or puttering along in the annual Community Day parade. Latterly we've watched in sadness as it fought and lost a battle against the ravages of rust. Now the time has come to retire this familiar West Van landmark and introduce our third generation bookmobile. Thanks to the support of Municipal Council and an extremely generous gift of $22,500 from the Friends of the Library, our new custom-built aluminum-sided (i.e. rustproof) bookmobile is about to enter service.
