AiIGIIST ’94 LIBRARY NEWS On the carpet again Ohe good news is we’ll be replacing that really tatty old carpet in the mezzanine sometime in August. The bad news is there are 14 rows of shelving containing an estimated 18,500 books sitting on it, not counting the oversize books on perimeter shelving that we won’t disturb. Just when we were at last able to talk calmly about the events of last summer - when carpeting was being laid, new shelves installed and large chunks of the collection moved here and there - we’re going to be doing it all again, albeit on a smaller scale. This means that non-fiction works with numbers between 000 and 740 (including car repair, gardening cooking medicine, home renovation, business) will be inaccessible for a short time - no more than a few days, we hope. We’ll post notices when we have a better idea of exact dates. Let’s not carp, it will soon be done! WEST VANC»UVER MEMORIAL LIBRARY 1950 Marine Drive West Vancouver. BC. It is rarely observed that the "Dutch" have been burdened with perhaps the greatest number of racist pejoratives, so much so that the Dutch government ordered its officials to use the term Netherlands whenever possible. Such terms: Dutch treat, double-Dutch, Dutch auction, Dutch bargain, Dutchman’s headache, Dutch medley, Dutch praise, Dutch luck, Dutch gold, to name a few, are listed in The Dictionary of Eponyms. It seems that these slurs began during 17th century hostilities when Holland’s colonial empires threatened to usurp Britain’s own. To further complicate matters, Germans refer to themselves as "Deutsch." This might well include the Germans as well as the Dutch as victims of Anglophone metaphorical molestations â€" hence, the term Pennsylvania Dutch refers to German and Swiss immigrants who settled in Pennsylvania during the 17th and 18th centuries.
