WEST VANCOUVER MEMORIAL LIBRARY 1950 Marine Drive West Vancouver, BC, V7V 1J8 TeL(604) 926-3291 Fax:(604)9266895 On-line catalogue: 9262£>4 REFERENCE SERVICES Little known is the research value of the Ottawa Letter which the Memorial Library has carried since 1975. It updates government measures and policy changes, particularly as they pertain to the Canadian economy. On a regular basis, the Letter features bank rates, foreign exchange rates of major countries, and progress of federal legislation. Financial and industrial statistics make up a large part of the Letter, drawing from Statistics Canada, as well as other sources. Frequently, the reader will find a list of names of people appointed to prominent positions or those deserving honourable mention. Consequently, this resource should not be overlooked by the avid researcher of the current Canadian political and economic scene. ADULT The aphorism "Consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds" has been attributed to Ralph Waldo Emerson. However, this is a misquote from his essay Self-Reliance, which states: "A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds, adored by little statesmen and philosophers and divines." Emerson appears not to have an express aversion to "consistency;" it would seem that "foolish consistency" is what he abhors.
