February ’»4 LIBRARY NEWS Dhe Friends of the Library are looking for additional members. This dynamic g^oup of 110 - 130 people provides fabulous support to the Memorial Library in many ways. Via Casino Nights, membership fees ($10 annually) and the book sale which they conduct each June, the Friends have donated nearly $60,000 to various Library causes in the last few years: $21,000 for the constmction project, $22,500 towards the new bookmobile, $16,000for equipment andjumishings in the Youth Services Department. They also host the monthly art exhibit receptions and the special open house in the Library which follows the Remembrance Day service at the Cenotaph. They produce a lively newsletter and their monthly meetings are friendly, and short. Each volume focuses on one occupational category, outline educational requirements and career plannmg. The authors provide advice on resume writing and job search strategies and assess employment opportunities for the career being considered, including a job opportumties databank detailing hundreds of companies Fliat hire at entry-level. Each volume identifies resources such as professional associations, agencies, career guides, search firms, want-ad sources, professional and trade journals. As the Olympic games remove the ban on professional athletes, the term shamateurism might very well become obsolete; it came into use at the turn of the century with the obvious combining of "sham" + "amateur" to mean an athlete who maintains amateur status necessary to compete in international events while being paid for other sporting performances. One ought to ask whether this is shambolic of the state of language or the state of competitive sports. "There is no such uncertainty as a sure thing." Jane Ford, a graduate of Emily Carr College of Art & Design, has had many solo exhibitions and has participated in seven group show^. Mary Baker has a teaching diploma fi-om U.B.C., studied fabric art at Capilano College and has eidiibited in the Ferry Building and the Harmony Arts Festival. Jill Southern attended Capilano College and the Emily Carr College of Art & Design. She has exhibited at Klee Wyck and participated in 2 group shows.
