Many people have commented about the colour of the building exterior, indicating that they find it much too dark. It should be noted that once the concrete has been sealed it will no longer turn darker during heavy rainstorms. In addition, now that the granite facing is being applied and the landscaping work begun, the final look of the building is starting to emerge. We're confident that once it's finished it will be appreciated by everyone, inside and out. REFERENCE DEPARTMENT This month we feature some new material relating to the environment including two directories and one ongoing government study. First we have the premiere edition of Stewart's Environmental Directory (1993). This directory is a "resource guide for environmental solutions" and lists primarily North American sources although there are some international ones as well. The Canadian listings are particularly strong because the directory is published in Delta, B.C. The arrangement is by subject and some of the more unusual subject headings include "Ice buckets â€" recycled plastic," "Office/school pencils â€" environmentally safer" and "Crayons â€" natural herbal dyes." The Greater Vancouver Regional District is reviewing its 1985 Solid Waste Management Plan. This three stage review will ultimately result in a new Plan to handle garbage disposal in the region in a more environmentally sound and cost effective manner. The Memorial Library will be receiving various reports as this process continues over the next year or so. The first of these. Stage 1 Report, is here and available for public consultation. Finally, to clear the air, we have received the latest edition of the Breathers' Dining Guide to completely smoke-free dining in over 275 eateries in B.C. This guide is compiled and published by the "AIRSPACE Non- smokers' Rights Society" and you can ask to see it at the Reference Desk.
