Although the overall cost of your library service may seem high, the total expense for each loan transaction is among the lowest of all local libraries, well below the B.C. average. When times are tough - as they are for many people today - the public library offers a wealth of informational, educational, cultural and recreational resources at a cost that few could afford on an individual basis. Most residents of West Van, as registered library users, are taking advantage of this bargain. Help us spread the word to the others. REFERENCE DEPARTMENT The motion picture industry is the theme of this month's Reference overview. The comprehensive International Motion Picture Almanac for 1992 has just arrived. It includes film personalities, talent and literary agencies, theatre circuits, pictures, equipment and supply outlets, advertising codes, film companies, academy awards from 1928 to the present, and an abundance of like information. The 2-volume Film Review Index lists films dating back to 1882, covering the time period to 1985, with cross indexing by director, year and country of production. A list citing review articles is provided for each film title entered in this index. Another 2-volume set is the International Dictionary of Films and Filmmakers, 2nd edition, which has recently arrived. In volume one films are alphabetically arranged by title and entries include production credits, major awards, cast members, characters and bibliographies. Volume two, a biographical directory of film directors, includes lists of films directed, books and articles by and about them. The entries touch on such aspects as the film's historical significance, artistic, innovative and technical merits, and ideological concerns.
