REFERENCE DEPARTMENT Beginning in January, the Reference Department attempts to update its information and statistical yearbooks, such as: almanacs, tide tables. Chase's annual events, Canada Year Book and other specialized handbooks. The long awaited British Colximbia Royal Commission on Health Care and Costs, popularly titled Closer to Hone, is now available in Reference as well as in the Circulating collection. As a result of the controversial deaths of two Manitoban Cree, Helen Osborne and John Harper, the Manitoba government carried out an extensive investigation. The resulting study, known as the Report of the Aboriginal Justice Inquiry of Manitoba, is available for use in the Reference Department. A series of lectures in 1990 sponsored by the Or Gallery Society, has been published in a book of essays. The forum allowed members of the local Vancouver art community to test their polemics publicly before having them presented in a printed volume entitled Vancouver Anthology: The Institutional Politics of Art, available in both the Reference and Circulating collections of the Memorial Library. ADULT SERVICES IN THE GALLERY ... oils and acrylics by West Vancouver artist Nancy O'Toole and watercolours by North Vancouver architect and artist Michael O'Toole will be exhibited January 3 to January 31. Nancy is a full-time artist who is actively involved in the B.C. art community. She instructs many workshops throughout the province. Her images are reproduced in prints and distributed worldwide, including two prints created in 1991 for the Vancouver Aquarium, "School's In" and "School's Out". Michael O'Toole studied architectural design at B.C.I.T. and professionally does architectural rendering and illustration. An impressionist, Michael uses intense colours to create the impact and drama he requires for his paintings. At present he works mainly in watercolours but is versatile in other media. Michael's work is in private and corporate collections across Canada, the United States, England and Japan. All paintings are for sale.
